After obtaining your deed poll from us, the process involves applying for a new passport in your new name, which can take 2-3 weeks for standard service or 1 week for the fast track option. The official UK government website (gov.uk) has the standard passport application form available. You can also visit a Post Office that offers the “Check and Send” service to get assistance with the paper application form.

 Driving License (DVLA)

  •  The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) aims to process name change applications within 3 weeks, but this timeline can vary depending on the current backlog of applications.

Utility Bills

  • This process is usually completed within 7- 10 days. Simply provide a copy of your deed poll to each provider/supplier and they will update the details on your account.

HMRC (Tax records)

  • Informing HMRC of your name change can be done by providing a copy of your deed poll. This will update your tax records, national insurance number, etc. This process takes on average 2-3 weeks.

Bank Accounts

  • This process typically takes 1-2 weeks for the bank to fully update all your account details. Visit the branch in person with the relevant documentation (e.g. marriage certificate, deed poll, etc.).

Although you are able to change your name to anything you want, there are some restrictions. The key laws and restrictions are:

  • The name cannot be used for fraudulent purposes, as that would be illegal.
  • The name cannot infringe on registered trademarks, as that would violate trademark law.
  • The name cannot be offensive or otherwise deemed inappropriate, as that would go against public policy.
  • The name should not use unusual characters like numbers, symbols, or punctuation, as names typically do not contain those.
  • The passport office may scrutinize name changes that appear coordinated or suspicious to prevent potential fraud.
As long as the new name meets these criteria you will be able to process a name change request and be issued a deed poll without issue. Here at Your Name Change we will help ensure that the name change is done properly and legally.
